FINDBIOMETRICS: Green Bit Eagerly Anticipates N2N Challenge Results

Green Bit is “eagerly” awaiting the results of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity’s Nail to Nail Fingerprint Challenge, which will be announced this month, according to a statement from the company.
IARPA launched the N2N Challenge early last year, when it invited biometrics specialists to “build the best autonomous nail to nail fingerprint capture device”. The aim is twofold: IARPA wants to both improve the collection of fingerprint biometrics by government authorities, whether live or on a forensic basis, and it wants to eliminate the need for a human operator. Self-enrollment may seem easy enough for everyday consumer smartphone biometrics, but it’s much harder when it comes to collecting an individual’s entire fingerprint, from one end of the nail bed to the other, which generally requires “rolled captures” helped along by a human agent.
But automated biometric technology has come a long way, as Green Bit and other rivals in the competition have demonstrated. For its part, the Italy-based company was selected to move on to the competition’s finals toward the end of last summer, having made a strong showing with its DactyScan40i fingerprint scanner and MultiScan SDK software. And while final winners were originally supposed to be announced last autumn, the announcement has been pushed back to March 21st, with the results to coincide with the Biometrics Institute’s U.S. Conference.
Of course, those companies that have made it to the finals have already proven themselves considerably. But being declared winner could open the door to further opportunities in providing N2N fingerprint technology to government clients and other interested parties, so Green Bit’s anticipation of the results is understandable.
